The map display area shows the map layers that are visible at the current scale. The scale bar is located in the bottom right-hand corner of the map display area. The north arrow is displayed in the lower left-hand corner of the map display area, along with the copyright information. The red arrows located in the center of each border of the map display area are navigational buttons. Clicking these will "pan" or move the map in the direction of the arrow.

The toolbar buttons provide various functionality. Holding the mouse pointer over a tool (without clicking on it) will pop-up a "tool tip" which describes what the tool does. In addition, a brief description (the toolbar mode) for the selected tool is displayed in the bottom left-hand corner of the interface, enabling the user to know which tool is currently selected. The currently selected tool will also have a red border around its icon. Each tool in the toolbar is described below:

Layer / Legend List

Depending on the mode of the Layer/Legend List tool, this area displays either the legend or the list of map layers displayed in the Map Display Area. Only the map layers that are visible at the current scale will appear in the legend/list. The user may need to zoom in fairly tightly to view certain map layers (e.g., parcels).

Layer Mode:

Map layers are drawn or hidden by checking the box beside the map layer under the "Visible" column. If the box is checked, the map layer will be drawn. After checking or unchecking a box or boxes, the user must click the "Refresh Map" button to redraw the Map Display Area.

The "Active" column beside the map indicates which map layer is currently active. Certain tools (e.g., Identify) act solely upon the active map layer. Only one map layer can be active at a time. To make a map layer active, simply click on the circle beside the map layer.

Legend Mode:

Displays the legend symbology for each map layer that is currently visible.
